Google Explains Why the Pixel Doesn’t Have Optical Image Stabilization

When Google announced its Pixel smartphone last week and boasted about its "best smartphone camera ever," there was one notable thing it lacked compared to the iPhone: optical image stabilization. Instead of physically stabilizing shots, the Pixel uses readings from the phone's built-in gyroscope to compensate for shake.

An Electronic (Not So) Instant Camera

Niklas Roy built a unique electronic "instant" camera using an old black & white video camera and thermal receipt printer. When turned on, the printer slowly prints the live video feed from the camera onto cheap receipt paper. Since the image isn't stored anywhere first, the subject has to remain still during the three minutes it takes for the image to be printed.

Aerial Photography with iPhone-Controlled Quadricopter

This is one of the coolest gadgets we've seen in quite some time. The Parrot AR.Drone is a quadricopter that you control visually through wifi using your iPhone or iPod touch. The quadricopter has a built in camera that displays the real time view of the drone on your screen while you control it. We're not sure if still photography or video capabilities are built in, but this could open the door to making simple aerial photography accessible to the general public.
