Tamron 50-400mm Review

Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III Review: Not Your Average All-In-One

At first glance, the Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD seems like Frankenstein’s monster of lenses. Super-telephoto lenses that provide a relatively wide focal length are uncommon and generally awful. Making a lens with such a wide range of focal lengths is complicated, yet Tamron made one that performs well across the zoom range.

The Nikon P1000 Has a 24-3000mm Equivalent Lens

And you thought the Nikon P900's 83x zoom lens was impressive. Nikon has just announced the Nikon COOLPIX P100, the "new undisputed powerhouse of superzooms." It packs a ridiculous 125x zoom lens that has the 35mm-equivalent focal range of 24-3000mm -- the most powerful range available in a compact camera.

200x Camera Zoom Lets You Read the Words on Airplanes

Here's a video that's going viral on the Web right now: Korean YouTuber MichealHrd shared this short video showing the power of a 200x camera zoom. You can zoom in on an airplane cruising by overhead and read the name of the airline on the side.

Canon Patents EF 28-560mm f/2.8-5.6L USM, Another Crazy Superzoom

Canon's on a roll with these crazy patents, and while they may not amount to much in the end, an editor can dream can't he? They already made headlines with their insane 40-800mm f/4.5-5.6 patent, and now Canon has developed an optical formula for not one, but two EF 28-560mm f/2.8-5.6 lenses.

This is What a 343x Camera Zoom Would Be Like

In addition to the megapixel war, major camera companies are also engaging in a new superzoom war with their latest compact cameras. We recently shared the incredible reach of the 64x zoom on the Canon SX60 and the 83x zoom on the Nikon P900. If we ever somehow get to the point of 343x zooms appearing in cameras, the video above shows what that would be like.

Check Out the Nikon P900’s Ridiculous 83x Zoom

Earlier this month, we shared a video showing the incredible reach of the Canon SX60, a superzoom compact camera with a 65x lens. If you thought that video was crazy, check out this one featuring the new Nikon P900, which packs an even longer 83x optical zoom lens -- the equivalent of a 24-2000mm lens in 35mm terms.

Ricoh’s New Pentax XG-1 is an Entry Level Superzoom with Some Speedy Specs

Photo bogs are always speculating what the next 'megapixel war' will be. For high-end cameras, it seems the answer to that question is the high ISO war, but for the entry-level shooters, an argument could be made for a 'burst mode war.'

Case in point, Ricoh just debuted the Pentax XG-1: a new entry-level superzoom that packs in some serious speed and reach, while hobbling the camera in other areas.

Sony Takes the Bridge Camera Bar to New Heights with Crazy 63x Superzoom at CP+

Canon wasn't the only one to food our inbox last night, and not even the announcements we were most anxious for. Sony also made some exciting announcements, including a refresh to its Cybershot line that includes three new superzooms and two new point-and-shoots.

Oh, and we should probably mention that one of those superzooms is the world's first bridge camera to feature a 63x optical zoom lens.

JK Imaging Debuts New Kodak Products at CES, Including QX-style Lens Cameras

There's one final gear announcement from CES that we just didn't manage to get to this week, and that is the new line of Kodak-branded products that JK Imaging showed off at the trade show. From lens cameras that look an awful lot like cheap knock-offs of Sony's QX10 and QX100, to an updated line of superzooms, a Micro Four Thirds model and a couple of 'rugged' action cameras, here's what JK/Kodak brought to the CES table.

Samsung Adds 60x Dual-Grip Superzoom Monster to Its SMART Camera Lineup

Samsung was the first to announce some of its new offerings pre-CES, but the company didn't let all of its cats out of the bag right away. In addition to the NX30, Galaxy Camera 2 and 16-50mm f/2-2.8 premium lens already announced, Samsung yesterday also refreshed its SMART camera lineup with a few point-and-shoots and two superzooms, one of which packs dual grips and monstrous 60x zoom.

Out on the Road: Sony DSC-RX10 Sample Photos

Alright, last but not least of the posts meant to convince you that I went to Nashville for photographic reasons and not because Sony paid for me to go hang gliding, I present to you: the sample images taken with the new Sony RX10.

Out on the Road: First Impressions of the Sony RX10

The Sony RX10 was in shorter supply than the other two cameras during my time with Sony in Nashville, so getting my hands on it was a little bit more challenging. But get my hands on it I did, and even though I spent less time shooting with it than I would have liked, what I found was a camera that really blew away whatever expectations I had.

Sony Unveils the RX10, a High Performance Superzoom for the RX Lineup

Admittedly, the a7 and a7R have sort of stolen the show when it comes to camera announcements today, but those two weren't the only shooters Sony debuted. The company is also adding another camera to high-end RX Cybershot lineup. Jointing the full-frame RX1 and the popular RX100MII is the RX10: a high-performance superzoom.

Nikon Unveils 18-140mm Lens, Speedlite, and Superzoom in One Fell Swoop

There's nothing like the smell of fresh press release in the morning, and earlier today, Nikon decided to send two our way. The releases contain info about three new products that Nikon is announcing all at the same time: a new DX format lens, a small speedlight, and a 14x superzoom compact camera.

Sony Unveils the Tiny HX50V, the World’s Smallest and Lightest 30x Superzoom

Somewhere in-between the point-and-shoot and ILC categories falls the superzoom, and it doesn't get much love. Often nearly as bulky as an entry-level DSLR, superzooms present a mix of features that only endear them to certain consumers. Sony's newly announced Cyber-shot aims to expand that market by shrinking down the traditional superzoom to tiny proportions.

Olympus SP-820UZ Packs a Ridiculous 40x Lens, Great for Wildlife and Jousting

We've been saying that the "compact" camera will still have a spot in the camera market, even after cell phones drink most of its milkshake, due to the fact that they can be specialized in ways phones can't. Here's another example: the new Olympus Stylus SP-820UZ is a super-zoom compact camera that packs an absurdly long 40x zoom lens. In 35mm terms, this lens reaches from 22.4mm to 896mm -- wide angle to super telephoto. In case that's not enough reach for you ("we need to go deeper!"), the camera also features a "super-resolution zoom" that uses digital zoom to offer up to 80x.

Canon Unveils the PowerShot SX500 and SX160: Zippy Zoom and Fast Focusing

Canon has added two new beefy compact cameras to its SX ("superzoom") line: the PowerShot SX500 IS and the PowerShot SX160 IS. The main features of these two cameras is snappy autofocus speed and powerful optical zoom. Both cameras feature a 1/2.3-inch CCD 16 megapixel sensor, an ISO range of 100-800, 720p video at 25fps, a 3-inch LCD screen, and Canon's Intelligent Image Stabilization (which helps you shoot sharper images even when zoomed in, panning, or walking).
